He slaughtered his own servants, and was setting up Corwin to think Dara killed them. He knew Dara was there and was setting up Corwin, and the best way to throw Corwin off that he was behind it, was to pretend to try to kill Corwin for minor reasons. You have to think more like a devious Amberite. And you CAN'T tell me that a Amberite wouldn't think of doing something like that, even Benidict.

I'm not seriously suggesting that by the way, but there is nothing in the books that would controdict my theory. Layers withen layers buddy. Everyone lies in the first series, including Benidict, although the lies we see from him are lies of omission, rather then out and out falshhoods.
