Just an additional note:
When Wizards began putting the Planescape books up as .PDF downloads for $5 each, I began systematically re-buying my Planescape library and selling off the physical books.
I love Planescape, but all I wanted from the books was the information. If I need to refer to a monster entry or a chart at the gaming table, I can print it out. If I want to pin up a choice bit of art on the wall, I just turn up the print quality, load photo paper and print it out instead of having to destroy my book.
My library can stay safely ensconced on CD-ROM where I can refer to it with a few mouse-clicks instead of having to juggle four books while typing up an adventure for my group.
Now, this may not say much about layout -- but it says something about how and why at least one GM prefers to work with bits than with paper.
