I pretty much agree with Justin Bacon on this matter, vis-a-vis Lovecraft, Howard and their self-appointed literary 'heirs'.

For all the slings and arrows August Derleth takes, many of them justified, he was motiviated to write his pastiche and champion Lovecraft because of his great love and affection of the Old Gent and his body of work.

The same can not be said of De Camp. Now I like De Camp and I enjoy many of his stories, but from my research and study into things Howardian, I've come to the rather unhappy belief that De Camp thought that Howard was a pulp hack who got lucky enough to catch lightening in a bottle with Conan. He may have enjoyed the Conan stories, but I don't believe that he respected them, and like many s.f. writers of his era he had no respect for Howard and his circle of fellow writers.
