As I recall, the properties of Excalibre were that it could not be dropped and would never break, which I imagine to be pretty dang important properties in practice, but a bit less so in a game where weapon breakage and disarms is not a common penalty.

It was also extremely important as a symbol that King Arthur was acknowledged as the rightful king by the ancient magics of Britain. Essentially he had the blessing of the Christians and Pagans both to rule.
