I'm with you, in general. Again, I think it just depends upon the design goals, though. <b><i>CoC</i></b> would be a more flexible game if it had rules for monster PCs, for example, but it would sacrifice a huge chunk of the Lovecraftian feel of the setting.

(Granted, that's a bit more extreme than allowing non-knight heroes in an Arthurian game. )
