well, now, IIRC, "noir" is also an adverb, so would be somewhat like English "blackly" or "darkly." One might also note that the use of the term to describe a style comes from the French "film noir," which is related to the French "roman noir" -- which is a reference to Gothic novels. And if you think of Gothics as being about shadows and secrets, you'll see the connection between the Gothic and the Noir.
