The thing to realize is the comment on evil in Eberron- The innkeeper who waters his drinks, is tempted to have his patrons beaten in the back by the bouncer if they show any signs of not paying, and never EVER helps someone in need is evil. He detects as evil. However, he is too cowardly to do the things that count as evil in other games. Now concidering that we know people in our lives who would be concidered evil in Eberron, and yet, still associate with them, the concept of gray is easier to understand. The idea of the Paladin detecting evil and then smashing it is something that does not belong on Eberron, except perhaps as a villain and adversary, as an illustration of fanaticism. Detect Evil does not mean 'Detect The Bad Guy.' in Eberron, and people would do well to remember that.
