One thing I find about the game is that items (perticularly the high-cost ones, as you mentioned) tend to be so good that a character's actual strength is almost entirely a function of the items they have and experience and levels are nearly irrelevant. Given the high variance of the 20-sided dice, +1 to any single stat is negligible. This in turn means that dying is virtually no inconvenience at all.
