I think too much math work for me, as I do tons of it at work and like my games light. I like straightforward math. Then again, I guess I could word it as if you have a skill of 35, if you roll a 15, you take the 1 from the tens die and add 2. That is a bit more straightforward.
And the old method sounds too much!
Anyway, I'm all for clear wording.

It used to be that you would subtract the 1 from the 3 and THEN if the ones number was lower than 5 then you would get another success (or something like that). That was dropped because it was just too darn confusing.
