Converted from Phorums BB System
As someone who has been playing tons of RPGs since 1996, I only picked up GURPS this year.
In the past, the idea of spending $90 for a generic system was crazy... it was a lot cheaper to just use a system I already owned for whatever I wanted (seriously, between Storyteller, D6, D20, 7th Sea, Buffy, and Tri-Stat, you can play pretty much anything... actually, with Storyteller alone, you can play pretty much anything).
What changed? My local gaming store decided to get rid of its stagnating GURPS stock, and I picked up a whole bunch of supplements, including WWII and Conspiracy X, for $5 or $10 each. The fact that WWII came with a specialized GURPS Lite encouraged me to download the regular GURPS Lite, and I realized how cool GURPS is.
I still don't own the Core Books... but I have 26 supplements, more than a few of which I bought at full price, and I'm planning on picking up the 4th Edition books when they come out.
Here's hoping that the slightly lower price tag will bring more people to the game.

(On the mostly unrelated topic of AEG only making D20 products, allow me to say how much it sucks that they made 7th Sea a D20 game, and it died almost immediately afterward. Why? Because the books were written with "bringing in D20 players" in mind, and even though R&K stats were included for everything, it still turned off the old players... who, after the fourth "Mysterious Magical Island of Mystery Monsters" supplement, realized that the days of getting useful information for a low-magic Continental game were over. And I don't think the D20 crowd ever warmed up to the idea of playing D&D-on-a-beach.)
