I'm with you on this, although I'd use either the new WoD rules (which seem easily adapted to FS, and which were rewritten by FS designer Bill Bridges--also, they're the next generation of the Adventure! rules you mention) or the recently released version of the d6 system--although I'd have to tinker together a hybrid of d6 Modern, Space, and Fantasy for it to really work...
