They state and repeat this point so much so that way people don't get the wrong idea about the game's intended tone and mood. This isn't some "kewl" Underworld spin off, and it's certainly not some tonge-in-cheek Angel episode--unless you really wanted it to be (and unless for some reason you avoided the games where that kind of stories are encouraged).

If someone do not like V:TR's take on vampirism, there's other options for you. The forementioned Angel/Buffy games allows you to play a goofy, cool looking, punchline loving vampire. And I bet you can wip something up more suited to your tastes using FUDGE, GURPS or something like that. And there's always SenZar....
