Prior to "Dark Knight Returns", Catwoman was a wealthy socialite who only turned to crime to attract Batman's attention...

After DKR, based on a throw-away joke by Mr. Miller, she gets re-made into a character who started out as a Prostitute (Catwoman works in a Cathouse, Get it? Ha! Ha! Bleah!}...

The decision to kill off 'Robin' was based on the image, in DKR, of the costume in a glass display case...

And this whole 'surly' routine where Batman continually exhibits contempt for anyone with actual Powers never happened before DKR!

It wasn't in continuity before it was published, but continuity has been re-shaped to conform to it since then!
