I got the following comments back from the publisher on the flaky gems:

"Just so you know, we have put a full court press on our production
regarding the flaking gems. We have just started to hear a couple of
isolated incidents, and we are still opening up games to see the extent
of the issue.

"It seems to be a very rare occurrence, but we will most likely change
production on our next print run."

I've heard elsewhere of very positive responses from OTB toward fixing the production problem, so I think it's well under control.
