Earlier Version Characters v.s XP

Converted from Phorums BB System
It sounds like it's a lot easier to make characters in XP. The things I didn't like about 1st, 2nd, and -- believe it or not -- the third editon, was that characters were a bear to create. They weren't hard, but there were skills, skill trees, subskills, etc. Kind of annoying for a guy who's gonna die in two or three adventures anyway.
As for a third edition, yes there was, or something akin to it, where West End went about and mangled all the rules, changed it over from a d20, and killed the line before fading into obscurity themselves. I don't have my copy in front of me so I can't remember the copyright date. I much preferred the 2E rules.
I had already changed character creation to a "you get X skills at this rating" kind of system. You start by choosing something you're really good at, then something you're kind of good at, then something you're average at, then something you really can't do well at. It seems to work out, and gives skill selection a bump in speed.
