I'd also point out that if you consider "roleplaying" with "playing a character", then this means that the GM is never actually roleplaying, despite being an active participant in a roleplaying game.

Actually, the GM technically plays Fate or Gawd, which is a very different person than who he actually is. Hence, roleplaying. Who else would you say has control of the universe?

I actually use the opposite definition to you. You say "a roleplaying game is a game in which you roleplay". This then leads to you making some quite big assumptions about what "roleplaying" is. I define "roleplaying" as "the act of participating in a roleplaying game" (which, of course, leads to me making huge assumptions about what "a roleplaying game" is).

I have no idea what you're talking about this time, not a clue. Roleplaying is playing a role, sure, but I never said Roleplaying is roleplaying.

I believe my chess analogy was best. In Paranoia, do you really care if your character lives or dies? You've got 5 more just like him (or is that 6 pack discluding your character?). Is he (or she) just a tool to be used to beat the other players? If that's the case, the game seems very tactical. Tactical, again, meaning you have pieces you manipulate to beat your opponent's pieces, but you aren't really playing the role of each of those pieces.

That's what this whole post was about. I'm still trying to figure out your "angsty" comment by the way.
