Continuity

Cheers, OS. Given my high regard for your stuff, I take that compliment seriously. Happy to have saved you from the burden of reviewing.

I agree about the continuity, although I think it is really only present in the Africa stories. The European stories are much more isolated and remind me more of Conan: one day Kane is in Devon, then he’s in Germany, with no sense of sequence. But the African stories do give a sense of following upon each other. And, of course, the African stories are the real heart of Kane.

If there’s a tragedy to Kane (the stories, not the character), it’s that Howard never wrote the story of why Kane returns to England. There is, I think, a great story forever lost to us in which something prompts Kane to finally turn around and head back home (not that he will stay at home). I suspect that he loses or destroys the juju stick in that story, since it isn’t mentioned in “Solomon Kane’s Homecoming”. But I’d rather that story stay forever out of reach than have someone supply it for us a la the new “Dune” books, “Lensman” books, and, of course, the infamous Conan pastiches.
