Except that the soul in the game is not a metaphor, but a living extension of a human being. So if the soul is a non-metaphorical part of the body, and it is missing or expired, the character would be, literally, dead inside.
Of course, someone whose heart has stopped beating may not literally be dead inside. The millions of symbiotic and parasitic creatures that live off of human flesh might still exist, as might the millions that will move in to munch on dead flesh. So someone who is "dead" might well be literally teeming with life inside.
Your critique of the reviewer's sentence errors was valid, if trivial. Your central critique is flawed at best.
