Presonally I always thought that the Caitiff were included from a game design perespective, so players would be able to create a character with a combination of Disciplines that the seven main clans didn't offer.

From a logistics point of view it became wacky once they said that you 'learned' your Clan from your Sire, which made absolutely no sense to me.
