There are a couple of games that do this with d6s as well - JAGS, for example, is based around 4d6-4, which is handled by reading sixes as zeroes.
For some systems, a scale that starts at zero is useful. For example, with 2d6 roll-under, by reading 6s as 0s, you can rate abilities on the everyday 1-10 scale. Or maybe the roll adds on to damage, and it makes more sense for the worst possible roll to be minimum damage.
