Don't be afraid to start PCs at level 3. They will be fairly powerful. (1d8 damage with your fists? +25 on Bluff checks? Sure!)

Don't be afraid to start 'em at level 10, either, of course -- whatever floats your boat. Just be aware that low level Adventure! D20 PCs are noticably more dangerous than low level D&D PCs.
