If you are so concerned with being "screwed", why don't you just collect miniatures from lines that cost less?

Reaper has a fine line of miniatures in their Dark Havens product list, and even miniatures from their wargame Warlord does not get that expensive.

Rag'Narok and Confrontation has beautiful miniatures that, while just about as expensive as GW, is of much higher quality modeling, and can provide a good painter with many times more the amount on one of their models that he/she would recieve from an entire unit + hero piece from GW.

Even Warmachine and Cav cost slightly less, and while not as high quality as Reaper or Confrontation (in my opinion) is still more of a value when it comes to painting.

You're not "screwed", you make choices to screw yourself.
