I still wish the setting had taken the "alternate Earth" approach of Cast a Deadly Spell. I'm sure it could be fun to play, though.

Indeed, "Cast A Deadly Spell" was what jumped to my mind when I heard about the first edition of Bloodshadows years ago and made me eager to buy it without a further look. I was - at first - very disappointed when I discovered that "other planet" setting.

Box and supplements collected dust in the shelves for a long time, until I had a second look, this time approaching the whole thing more relaxed and from a different point of view.

Instead of looking for "(Film) Noir" with Horror/Fantasy elements, I then thought about it as a pretty standard fantasy world with the Fast Forward button pushed up to the Roaring Twenties. With that, I finally made my peace with the game and actually had fun running a small "hard-boiled" campaign.

However, to catch the Deadly Spell feeling there's still the option of Mean Streets XPG with the Old Black Magic add-on.

Cheers,
Achim
