Another, dissent to your dissent.

This game is fantastic. Like others have said, no it does not have any real tactical elements to it but I don't think that is the point. It emulates a genre and allows you to join in the campy fun of being in a b-grade horror film. In fact when we play, there is so much exposition and in-character dialog. It is a riot. One of friends, describes the camera work for every scene (fade to black by going to an extreme close-up of her screaming mouth). When we get the cards, we read in a spooky voice and make the appropriate sound effects. Of course the lights are down low and a sounds of halloween cd is playing in the background. We get so excited about the haunt and it was mentioned that taking the books and going to another room ground the action to a halt...hmm, this hasn't been my experience, everyone gets so excited and trys to plot and plan with constant yells to the traitor to check to make sure he/she isn't listening. And no matter who wins or loses, we have always had a creepy good fun at the end (dying is great fun cause we act out the whole scene for your character!) (end gushing)
That said, one time I played one bad game when a guy I normally play heavy duty games asked to play with us. I already knew it wasn't going to be his cup of tea and he kept asking rules questions where we have never even thought of them before and he kept trying to focus on the strategic importance of each item. (hmm, this toy monkey can be dangerous. If the rules allow it, I am going to drop this item.-we were all what??? drop the toy monkey!!!) So definately it depends on the gaming experience you hope to have with it, but for pure creepy as bad wrong fun, Betrayal can't be beat!
