Funny....movies have drama without any player input....
Movies have drama because you have an emotional stake in them. It's tough to have an emotional stake in a game that bestows penalties and rewards arbitrarily.
People who like this game do so because they want to like it, not because the game is any good. Seriously, would this game be worse if it had more control? Would it be worse if there were any reason to "Let's not go into the basement yet"? Would it be worse if you had to balance getting goodies with avoiding the Haunting? Would it be worse if the rules were less vague?
Is it enough for a game to merely have a good theme? It bugs me when people prise this game because that sends a signal to designers that their rules don't have to be thought out as long as you slap on an appealing theme.
