Long Answer:

The stations are totally required because of the new way that destination cards are distributed.

The tunnels and ferries feel integral because they're tightly integrated with the board. You have ferries over the water and tunnels under mountainous areas. Zurich is a pain to get to, because it's all tunnels! There's also similar issues getting in to Spain.
