Project 74 essentially applies some 3.0 concepts to B/X D&D. It takes the four basic classes (fighters, thieves, clerics, and mages) and adds some skills (and other stuff IIRC) to allow for greater customization. It also keeps classes and races distinct.

I like the Project 74 rules, and using them with the RC would make for a fine game IMO.

OTOH, I am using C&C with both B1 and B2 right now, and that is working out fine.

Check out the 74 rules (they're free). If you prefer a system with fewer flexible classes over a system with a wider range of less flexible classes, then go with it.
