For high-adventure swords and sorcery, (comparable to AD&D 5th to 10th level stuff) GURPS 3e stank on ice. Combat was too realistic and deadly and the magic system was a snoozer.
Hopefully, this has been fixed in the new edition.
We ported the same campaign to Hero 4th ed, where players were finally able to have swashbucking adventures and cast really cinematic magic. Frankly, I find your opinions to the contrary puzzling. (Maybe you just weren't playing the Hero version with enough points?)
The campaign later got ported into our own house system later, so, as the Bard would say, "a plague on both your houses!"
