It's also worth noting the the nation, as a nation, didn't survive. It still exists in the sense that India still existed durring the British Raj. It's a conqured people going through a long and painful colinization process.

Which still may not be 100% realistic, but isn't ludicrous beyond words in a fanstasy setting wherein the people of said country have vastly powerful magics at their back.
