'India' didn't really exist before then. There were dozens, maybe hundreds of little pinricipalities before the British moved in. Twenty something or more languages. Three relgiions. Several ethnicities. Etc. As a national, or political entity, India didn't exist until after the British left. (Unless you count the Mughal Empire, which was strictly a northern state and hardly an Indian one at that.)
