Ralph might not disagree, but actually, I do. Imagine that you're playing Universalis with four other people. For the low, low cost of providing 1/5 of the story (or even a smidge less if you feel like it) you get four (that's FOUR!) GMs providing story for you to explore. That's a hell of a lot of pay off for a very small price.
Now you don't have to like Universalis, but the way I see it, plugging in your stated preferences, Universalis is very much about delivering the kind of game that you could enjoy. Tweak it a bit with Gimmicks and you're right there.
And I have to tell you, from a fair amount of experience with this game, the "sense of exploration" -- the surprise and challenge, that you get when things click into place and the story really starts to unfold is every bit as cool as a standard GM-player game and much cooler in many ways. It's not the only kind of game I play, but I'm sure glad it's there.
