Good point, Chris.
Universalis actually provides a pretty amazing amount of suspense to all of the players. Instead of having 4 players trying to figure out what 1 GM is up to, you have 5 players trying to figure out what 4 other GMs are up to.
So from that perspective there is definitely a sense of exploration.
Its the immersive experience that can't ever be strictly adhered to in the game 100%. You can get your immersive kicks, but only if you're willing to hop characters and come up for air periodically to act on a meta level before submerging again.
For someone who expects to remain "in-character" at all times and see the world only through the character's eyes...you -could- do that with the right gimmicks and willing other players...but the game offers zero support for that sort of play.
