Yes, Hero Quest and Advanced Hero Quest were available at the same time.

The box covers also featured the same characters, if I recall, although the Advanced Hero Quest one seemed more grown up - possibly it was all orcs and goblins, rather than grabbing something of everything, in the way that Hero Quest's cover did (1 mummy, 1 Chaos warrior, 1 fimir...).

I know a hell of a lot of gamers who used Hero Quest as a stepping stone into either (or both of) wargaming or roleplaying.

MB/Games Workshop also did the same thing with Space Crusade and Advanced Space Crusade, although the themes of the latter were more divergent - Chaos-infested space hulks became organic Tyranid hive ships, whereas the Hero Quests were all ruins, castles or *spit* dungeons of some sort or another.
