Yep. The randomness put me off. With the 3.0 D&D Introductory Set, they at least had separate adventures, each having its own theme.
My random guess is are the mini's. Gamers (or at least new ones) like variety, so the variety of mini's required the variety within the dungeon.
Of course, I remember the old days of "hack and slash" AD&D where it didn't matter what was behind the door, so long as it was something **new** we could kill, loot, and plunder.
