Well, some might ask whether OUR society is really capable of supporting grand conspiracies. Depending on just how "grand" it is, it strains credulity that people could really keep such secrets. Though if you're a conspiracy theorist, the answer is "yes, of course!"

But as far as inter-connectedness goes...most people aren't, but some groups are. The nobility for one. They could send letters fairly reliably. Also the Church, and the merchants to some extent, especially the Jews. So I'd look there if you want to keep it a little more down to earth. Secret peasant communiques delivered to the village by night, on the other hand...
