The 4E GURPS books have a little snippet of fiction at the beginning of each chapter that's related to the subject matter in the chapter.

I don't know why they do it. Maybe so that you have a little break between chunks of rules & options. It's unintrusive, and easy to skip past those few paragraphs, so it's no big.

That they're well-done is just a bonus.
