The critic didn't say not to buy the book just because of the art, but having poor art is certainly a valid criticism.

I am far less likely to buy a book if it looks poor. I am one of those gamers who rarely plays, but I buy a lot of books because I enjoy reading and looking at them.

For the expense incurred with buying a typical RPG book, I think they should be works of art. It's not enough for a publisher to concentrate on content alone, they need to consider the total package.

I give high marks to Wizards of the Coast, White Wolf and Eden for their high publishing standards. Then there's Palladium and, I suppose, Steve Jackson on the other side.
