Converted from Phorums BB System

The Castle Keeper Guide isn't absolutely necessary to play the game. All that is truly needed from what I've seen on the Castles & Crusades message forums is the Player's Handbook/Monsters and Treasures combination. I believe there is a slight amount of confusion because everyone is used to the three book system that AD&D started. But if you look back, OD&D, those three brown books in a box, didn't really need the third book to function. Combat was spelled out in Men & Magic, and the monsters were in Monsters & Treasure.

Jamie, I don't know if you've ever seen an OD&D book, but even in there, the spells at the very least had range and duration. Spells, on second viewing, are perhaps the one part of the collector's edition box set rules that I don't like. Sure I can wing it and make up range and duration on the fly or use an AD&D/D&D/OD&D equivalent, but that stuff should be in there.

Then again it wouldn't be trading on nostalgia if the collector's edition box set wasn't missing some stuff, neh?
