Converted from Phorums BB System

Hey,

At present (before the optional Skill rules come out in the Castle Keepers Guide), it's largely a factor of playing the character different/talking about it with the CK.
For my purposes, I have no need at all for strict Skills to differentiate two characters. I rely on well-developed character backgrounds and roleplaying, followed by a simple houserule wherein a character can add his class level to any Attribute rolls that reflect the skills/knowledge he would logically possess as a result of said background. I've found it's a very simple, common sense, and easy to use approach that doesn't necessitate (for me, anyway) skills, skill tracking, proficiencies, or anything of the sort, and is also less restricted. For instance, if your character was a sailor, you might reasonably expect him to have knowledge of ropes and knots, nautical terms, caulking and basic boat repair, perhaps some navigation and basic cartography, sewing, knowledge of nautical hazards, the ability to best steer and sail a vessel, knowledge of certain major ports, contacts with other existing and ex-sailors, ship-to-ship signalling methods, a bit of knowledge about trade goods if it was a merchant vessel, etc.
And all without needing an exhaustive skill set.

Now, don't get me wrong, if you're a fan of skill sets, more power to you, and it'd be easy enough to port the 3.Xe rules over to C&C, or create some houserules, or use someone else's houserules, or wait for the optional rules in the CKG. However, don't expect them in the PHB.

cheers!
Colin

Not to be a pain, but I have actually liked the 3.x skill system as a means of customizing pc's. I can see the ease of use of what I have heard of C&C, but wonder how one pc is different from another if they have the same Prime? I can take the same set of stats and class and make two very diff pc's in 3rd ed. I wonder if this is possible under C&C to the same extent or if this a case of "just play it different/talk about it with the dm"
