You are correct!
Powers cost Humanity to use, and even more Humanity to acquire...
and some of the Powers were quite impressive!
Alter Reality, for example, or their version of Raise Dead, though both were quite expensive...
Most of the races had to Feed, as well, and that cost more Humanity, especially if you left your victims dead.

As to the name, I suppose they could have called it something else, but 'Humanity' gets the point across, while 'Experience Points' kind of give the wrong impression...
Even if you were never Human, if you got your Humanity score up to 100, you would 'seem' Human, for most purposes, so I don't think it's really all that silly...
