I agree that the base set is a good intro to beginners but once my friends and I played Cities and Knights, we hardly touched Settlers anymore.

The only expansion that I felt was disappointing was the Seafarers expansion. I think the price was the same as the original but there wasn't as much components and the rules expansion didn't add much more excitment to the game.
