Well...that's a problem with most skill-based systems. I've only encountered a couple of systems (Chaosium and GDW) where your skills increase through use of the skills themselves, rather than in the more abstract and rather silly way you mention.

Anyway, WFRP doesn't really award xp for killing, and to be fair to D&D, it has always suggested that xp come from "overcoming obstacles" rather than specifically "killing stuff". Of course, there were few mechanics provided for the overcoming obstacles part, so they sort of shot themselves in the foot...
