I'm less concerned with getting the players into pitched battles (there are much better ways to handle that, as you suggest), but more that the original WFRP enables you to create your own Bestiary if you had the Battle books, by simply converting monsters over to WFRP.

Obviously they've noted that that's a potentially Bestiary-sales-destroying shortcut and have removed it.

Although the old rules should still work...
