Metaphorically

Converted from Phorums BB System
From Dictionary.com:
"pertaining to or resembling or befitting Faust or Faustus especially in insatiably striving for worldly knowledge and power even at the price of spiritual values"
Faustian has a much looser meaning these days; it means a pursuit of knowledge at the price or risk of your soul. It's not LITERALLY faustian, but it's metaphorically faustian.
So is Deadlands' system, by the way.
That said, we could probably use a more precise term for it. Do we have any mages in literature who gambled for their power, and won? Or who risked great injury and/or insanity, but survived? Perhaps Hammerian? Hammer Horror mages were always going nuts.
