I think RPG grognards have to go back to the seventies, but based on the great review I'll dub you one anyway for mentioning both Erol Otus and Professor Tucker's "Tractics" game. Gygax used to beat Tucker's ass every week at chess, incidentally. Tucker kept making up variant rules and Gygax would beat him at his own chess variants until Tucker finally stopped meeting with him in disgust.

C&C is the best version of D&D currently in print. There are many things to quibble about in the rules, but they're only quibbles, and if you've put in the time with other versions they're easily adjustible in accordance with personal taste.
