Well...as one of the fellows who wrote Conan supplements for Mongoose, I can tell you everyone involved respects the body of work.

However, in a 'non-writer' capacity I agree with you. The 1 to 1.5 hour combats built into d20 do not lend themselves well to a flowing REH style. To solve the problem I designed a narrative d20 combat system for my own use. Pirate Isles contains a fragment of it, if you are interested in the general shape of the thing.
