Converted from Phorums BB System

I've been running D&D,v3.50/D20 for a while now and can mange to run through decent fights in a decent amount of time althought apparently not quickly enough to most likely please some of the folks who've replied to this thread.
I understand the concept that melees that last too long can be tedious but...I thought this was CONAN we were talking about here. Conan is all about melee! Swords and axes clattering on shields and slicing through muscle and sinew, blood splashing everywhere. If you're into that kind of thing, why on earth would bother with setting? Drinking brews, hacking down the enemy (or whoever happens to be too close), and glory or the order of the day! NOT in-depth plotlines with deep meaning. I've read a good 100 or so of those old B&W Conan comics back in the day and a couple of the paperbacks and liked them but Tolkien or Donaldson or Goodkind they're not. OK?

Anyway, one thing that running and playing D&D since 1978 (79?) has taught me is that it's magic that slows down a larger rpg combat situation, not melee. A few extra feats and tactical options shouldn't prove too critical if the DM and at least 1-2 players has put in enough effort to understand what this particular game is trying to do. If it does, then the possibility of lazy rpg-syndrome is just as likely as the possibility that there's something wrong with the system as designed.

My 2 cents.
