Well, some settings require, others less. I can't comment on Forgoten Realms, but "supernatural godlings galore, nobody ever notices" puts me off with a lot of contemporary fantasy, supernatural, and I was never attracted to Star Wars (I'm always put off by sci-fi that is aesteticaly too obvious a Nazi vs. Americans look-a-like).

On the other hand, I'm perfectly happy in suspending my desbilief with super-heroes or cartoons. Go get it.
