My reading of Howard and Lovecraft is that the two borrowed each other's ideas through mutual admiration, rather than as a deliberate attempt to combine their work under a single background.

Several Lovecraftian creatures (especially the Old-One-style demons) appear in Conan, and Hyboria and the Hyperboreans feature as "lost-empires" in Lovecraft's work. Is Conan part of the Cthulhu Mythos? Yes... and no.
