Probably the former. I mean, Transhuman Space just extrapolates from current trends, and current trends seem to include a gradually increasing acceptance of homosexuality. I mean, there are legal marriages or civil unions for homosexuals in much of Western Europe already...
And given that it is entirely possible in TS that people can switch their
functional sex for all intents and purposes, including procreation, and that many do so - and that there are numerous
new forms of sapient living beings out there, many of them sexually compatible with humans - it is rather easy to acknowledge that homosexuality simply isn't a hot issue any more, the way it is in the modern-day USA.
Though truth to be told, some people see TS more as a horror than an utopian setting because of all of the "future shock" elements - but that does not seem to detract from its attractivity.
